Mirror Technique

 

  • This is used by FBI negotiators to build rapport or make someone realize they are being unreasonable.

HOW TO DO IT :

When they say something angry or crazy, simply repeat the last 3 words they said as a question, with a calm, curious tone.

  • Them: 'You never listen to me and I'm sick of it!'
  • You: '...sick of it?'
  • Them: 'Yes! Because I feel like...'

WHY IT WORKS :

  • It forces them to elaborate and explain themselves. Usually, when they try to explain their anger in detail, they realize how irrational they sound and calm down.
